No Space Left

I was getting these errors trying to post to the blog all last night (well, at least the two or three times I checked to see if it was fixed):

There were errors. (Hide details ...)
java.io.IOException: No space left on deviceblog/60/59/1/soeck/archives/2006_01_01_soeck_archive.html

Nice. A litle bit of monitoring on the server would have avoided that handily.

And tonight I can't get photos to upload. But then again, it's not like I am paying anything for the service.

You get what you pay for ;) I host all my own stuff and pay for it dearly -- in wasted free time :(

I hadn't upgraded my Linux kernel in a year and a half (8/2004, 2.4.27) because the new versions offered nothing that I *needed*. Anyway, I put in another 512MB of RAM that my father had laying around at home unused and realized that I didn't have "HIGHMEM" support compiled into the kernel. Using 896MB of 1.5GB seems a bit silly so I downloaded the latest kernel, compiled it, and forgot a key piece of important information... Compiling and installing the modules.

Anyway, after much frustration and a good night's sleep I had it fixed.

Why didn't I use someone else to host my site -- free?! At least I could blame someone else when my site is down ;)

Heh, compiling the kernal but no modules makes me recall the unfortunately several times that I recompiled the kernel and rebooted, forgetting to update the lilo config.

Very smart.

heh, "why does uname -a report the same kernel version I was running before and why is my System.map all messed up?!"

Yup, been there and done that :)

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and upgrade to 2.6 and become a Linux-nerd again... Hmm ;)

Bill, I just don't have the free time to devote to running Linux anymore at home. For a long time that and FreeBSD were my only OSes, but it got to be too much of a hassle as I got busier.

Nikki, I was able to upload some pictures this morning, and again tonight. So it seems better now.
