Movies: Howl's Moving Castle

A few weekends ago Linzy and I watched Howl's Moving Castle. I thought it was OK, but it wasn't my favorite.

The movie had all the hallmarks of being a Hayao Miyazaki film, with a very unique world filled with interesting characters. The animation was well done, although not quite at the level of Spirited Away.

My main complaint was that the story didn't make much sense. Now, to some extent that is expected in any Anime film, and certainly there were strange parts of all the other Miyazaki films. But this film's plot at times didn't even make sense within the context of film itself. The things the characters did at times were just unexplainable.

For example, the wicked witch who curses Sophie ends up living all of them in the moving castle as 'Grandma'. Why? Same thing for the dog, who was outed as an agent of the evil wizard, was invited to stay with them. It just didn't make any sense.

On the other hand, when I was able to ignore the mysteriously flimsy plot the film was pretty enjoyable. The fire demon was hilarious, and there were plenty of entertaining things going on in the movie. All in all, it added up to being an OK movie but not really one that I'll find a reason to watch again.
